HKU x Mama.Media: Case Study

HKU (Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht) is one of the most prestigious art universities in the Netherlands, offering programs in visual arts, media, music, and performance. With a mission to nurture the next generation of creative talent, HKU needed a way to bring the creative projects of its students into the digital world in a professional and accessible way.

As digital experiences become more vital to educational institutions, HKU required a platform that could host a variety of online content, including virtual expositions and student project pages. The university needed a solution that was easy to manage, scalable, and flexible enough to accommodate both artistic presentations and the students' academic portfolios.

The Challenge

HKU needed a digital solution that could:

  • Provide a powerful online platform for virtual expositions, allowing visitors to explore student work interactively.
  • Enable students to build their own project pages to showcase multimedia content, including text, images, and videos.
  • Support multiple websites under one system, simplifying content management for both staff and students.
  • Offer a user-friendly interface for all students to create and manage content autonomously.

The Solution

Mama.Media provided HKU with a versatile platform designed to meet their specific needs. The collaboration resulted in:

  • Virtual Expositions: The Mama.Media platform was used to power online virtual expositions for HKU, allowing students to showcase their work in a visually appealing, fully interactive format. Visitors could explore a wide variety of creative projects, including visual arts, multimedia performances, and more.

  • Student Project Pages: Each student was able to create a personalized project page using Mama.Media’s publishing tools. These pages provided a platform to display videos, high-quality images, written content, and interactive features that allowed their work to shine.

  • Graduation Website: In addition to project pages and expositions, Mama.Media powered the HKU Graduation Website, allowing all graduates to showcase their portfolios, providing a professional platform for students to present their work to potential employers and the public. This central website offered a cohesive digital space for discovering the creative talent emerging from HKU.

  • Multiple Website Management: Mama.Media powered not just the graduation website, but also 10 other websites for HKU, making it easy for the university to manage its entire online presence from a single platform. Each website featured a unique blend of content, including student projects, program information, and online galleries.


    Implementation Process

    Mama.Media worked in close collaboration with HKU to ensure that the platform met their needs:

    • The platform was customized to accommodate the specific needs of HKU’s various departments, from visual arts to performance. Mama.Media’s out-of-the-box publishing tools allowed students and staff to easily create content and manage the digital presence with minimal technical training.
    • Mama.Media provided training sessions to ensure that both faculty and students could fully utilize the platform’s features. This included guidance on how to set up project pages, manage multimedia content, and optimize the user experience for visitors.
    • Students were given autonomy to create their own project pages, showcasing their work with multimedia elements such as videos, text, and images. This process was streamlined through Mama.Media’s user-friendly platform, making it easy for students to take control of their digital portfolios.

    • 11 Websites Managed: Mama.Media successfully powered 11 different websites for HKU, offering centralized management for staff and seamless navigation for users. This expanded digital footprint allowed HKU to maintain a consistent online presence across various departments and initiatives.

    • Student Empowerment: Through Mama.Media’s platform, students were able to take control of their own digital presentations, building personalized project pages that showcased their work in a professional manner.
